Brandenburg an der Havel, with a population of around 74,000, is the largest independent city in the federal state of Brandenburg. Three medieval town centres with the cathedral and 58 bridges characterise the cityscape today. In the urban area, the Havel branches out into several side arms and canals that form a number of islands. The river offers a wide range of water sports.
